Venetian Lagoon North: Murano, Lazzaretto Nuovo and Sant’Erasmo 25/05/2025

07:00 am Bus departure from Piazza Oberdan (Trieste)*inthe direction of Punta Sabbioni. Meeting with the guide and the reserved boat and beginning of navigation to discover the northern Venetian lagoon and the fascinating islands of Lazzaretto Nuovo, Sant’Erasmo and Murano.

Lazzaretto Nuovo is a museum surrounded by greenery: within the city walls, the museum exhibit and archaeological trail are located in the large garden dotted with bicentennial mulberry trees. Other small wooded areas testify to the wooded appearance common to the lagoon islands before human colonization. Outside, the perimeter of the island slopes spontaneously into the original Lagoon, i.e., the salt marshes (from the dialect term “baro”: bush/shrub). Activated since 1992 by recovering the old military patrol route, The Barene Trail is, in the field, the ecomuseum’s nature trail.

At the end of the visits transfer to Murano, world-famous for its artisanal glass production. In 1291 the Serenissima decreed that the city’s glassworks be moved here to contain the consequences of disastrous fires generated by the workshops’ furnaces. Lunch in a restaurant followed by a short walk and visit to a glassworks.

Continuation of navigation in the direction of Sant’Erasmo, sparsely inhabited but second in size after Venice. Since the Middle Ages in this strip of land wrested from the waters, fruits and vegetables were cultivated to supply the city. Walk among fields and vineyards and visit the Massimiliana Tower, a 19th-century war fort placed to defend the Lido’s harbor mouth.
